Pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School in Somerford, Christchurch have been shown an exciting way of making sure their hands are really clean.Jeanette Booker, Environmental Health Officer at Christchurch Council, visited St Joseph’s with some ‘glitterbug potion’ and an ultraviolet light following an invitation from the school during their ‘Funky Food & Fitness Week’.Jeanette spread some of the potion on some plastic sausages and then got the children to handle them. When they put their hands into a device with the ultraviolet light, the light showed up the ‘germs’ which the potion represented on their hands. They were then instructed to go away and wash their hands thoroughly. They came back and put their hands in the ultraviolet light device again. Those who had no trace of the ‘germ’ potion were immediately given a GermWatch badge, those whose hands still showed some ‘germs’ had to go back and wash again.Jeanette said: “This was a fun way to give the children a serious message – that unless you wash your hands thoroughly, germs can still exist even if you can’t see them. Some of them had to make several attempts before their hands were really clean.”After the Funky Food & Fitness Week, when she saw all children in Years One and Two, Jeanette was invited back to give the handwashing awareness training to the rest of the school.Sharon Miccoli, Deputy Head at St Joseph’s School said: “The children were so impressed by Jeanette’s first visit that pupil representatives on the Healthy School Team insisted that we invite her back to share her important message with the remaining classes of pupils. “This very effective way of helping children to understand the importance of hand hygiene has had a real impact on pupils' awareness and we are very grateful to Jeanette for visiting us.”
