Open Day at Nea Meadows - Bring a picnic !

Members of Christchurch Council’s Countryside Service are organising an Open Day at Nea Meadows, Smugglers Lane South, Highcliffe on Saturday 11 July from 11am to 4pm.A host of activities has been arranged to keep people of all ages amused, including a chance to climb a tree in a safe environment, a wild flower walk at 2pm and a ‘dog pit-stop’ with free dog waste bags, dog food samples, and information for the many dog walkers who use the Meadows.A willow sculptor and a chain-saw carver will show examples of their craft and younger visitors will be able to take part in activities organised by the Council’s Play Rangers.People visiting are being invited to bring food and a blanket to take part in a communal picnic on the meadow from 1pm to 2pm.A new leaflet giving the history of the Meadows and a map will be launched during the day and light refreshments will be available.
Entry to the Open Day is free of charge but please note that car parking is limited and there are no toilet facilities on site.
Nea Meadows is situated to the East of Christchurch Borough, within
the Nea Ward and close to the village of Highcliffe. The area comprises
of a variety of natural habitats including mixed meadow, wetland and
woodland as well as formal recreation. The site is surrounded by
residential development. Designated as a public open space, Nea Meadows
is currently managed for nature conservation and recreation. It also
incorporates a flood defence measure.
Historical information
Nea
Meadows is part of the former grounds of a large 18th Century estate,
existing as formal parkland in the demesne of Nea House, which was
demolished in 1940. Landscaping, wooded areas, some standard trees,
ornamental species and remnants of the original fish pond survive from
this period.
