Impact is a charitable organisation which provides, amongst other things: training for teachers in Nepal, India and Bangladesh; immunisation programmes and midwifery training for Africa and Asia; education about nutrition for children; and the construction of water stations.
Following a presentation by Dr Lynette Moss of Impact, last year, Christchurch Rotary Club members voted to provide money for 25 water tanks to be installed in Zanzibar.
Judi and Sarah explained that each tank holds 2,000l of water; enough to supply 1,000 people with clean drinking water. The tanks are sited where natural boreholes are already present and use generators to provide the pumping mechanism. To date 5 tanks have been installed; 3 in Tomondo and 2 on Pemba Island, the other 14 will start construction soon.
Rtn.Howard Matthews, Chair of the Club’s International Committee, moved the vote of thanks for Judi and Sarah’s talk, and charged them to keep the club informed about progress in Zanzibar.
