Work to build the HIGH5 play area at Highcliffe Recreation Ground starts on 15 February and is likely to last for approximately four weeks.

Although the work starts during half-term week, it will not affect the existing play area. The work is being carried out by local company Sutcliffe Play (South West).

The new HIGH5 area will contain an aerial cableway, an overhead rotator, a climbing zone, a trim trail, a ball court and a shelter. It has perimeter fencing and links with the existing play area via a footpath and mounding.

The final design came about following a consultation with children and young people from Highcliffe St. Mark’s Primary School, Highcliffe School and users of the site, as well as local residents.

The work will cost £57,000, £40,000 of which has come from a bid made by Christchurch Council for funding from the Department of Children, Schools and Families Playbuilder Project. A further £13,000 has come from a bid by the students of Highcliffe School and Highcliffe Residents Association Community Interest Company (HRACIC) through the Youth Opportunities Fund, while £4,000 came from Dorset County Council’s Youth Service.

Cllr Josephine Spencer, portfolio holder for Children and Young People at Christchurch Borough Council, said: “This is wonderful news for the young people of Highcliffe. The new HIGH5 area will provide them with a more exciting and challenging environment in which to play and will encourage more of them to take part in physical activities.”

A spokesman for HRACIC added: “This project has been much anticipated by the community in Highcliffe and will be the start of many good joint community projects in years to come.”

An official opening ceremony, to be organised by Highcliffe Residents’ Association in conjunction with key stakeholders, will be carried out in late spring.
