The Wessex

Autistic Society’s new residential care facility has been officially opened,

providing individualised support for adults with autism.

The Mayor of

Christchurch, Councillor Nicholas Geary welcomed guests to the Grand Opening,

which included parents, professionals, carers and staff, before speaking about

the wonderful addition of the care provision to the Society’s range of support

services throughout the region.

Designed to provide a supportive and engaging

living environment, the care facility for four residents over the age of 18

located in Manor Road in Christchurch, aims to allow each individual to

maximise their potential and actively engage in the community.

Speaking at the

opening, Chair of Trustees Mary Claire Boyd commented, “We are delighted to be

able to offer a new adult residential care service in Christchurch, which is a

welcome addition to our four existing residential homes across the county. The

proximity of the accommodation to Portfield School is ideally situated for

children moving out of Further Education as well as being centrally situated

for residents to access local amenities and integrate with the community. We

are in an excellent position to offer robust and individualised care for each

resident as they make the transition from education.”

Staff support is

high with one Keyworker, a Deputy Manager and the Manager to oversee each

resident’s personalised care plan, which is tailored to each individual’s

development needs and wishes. Registered with the Care Quality Commission, the

accommodation has been renovated to a high standard and enjoys purpose built

facilities including an activity room, large communal living spaces and

individual bedrooms with ensuites. A daily programme of activities is designed

to offer each resident the opportunity to take part in activities they enjoy

leisurely as well as developing their communication, learning and life skills.

This will include sessions within the home and garden as well as accessing

community facilities.

Registered Manager

Simon Kelly McGhee comments, “At Manor Road our person centered approach to

development recognises that each individual with autism is different and as

such the specialised support provided is tailored to the individual service

user and their individual needs. Working with the person and those who know him

or her best, our dedicated team of staff will support a personalised care plan

which is focused on the independence and quality of life outcomes to which the

person and their family aspires. We are keen that Manor Road will be a ‘Home

for Life’ for its four residents and provide a safe, supportive and positive

environment which allows each individual to feel confident to be able to

express themselves, maximise their potential and enjoy a good quality of life.”
