Is litter becoming a real problem in Christchurch ?
While the Borough has a good record for cleanliness, there have been more reports in recent months about litter collecting, particularly around cafes and food retailers in the town centre. Cigarette butts outside premises have also been a problem.
The Council has doubled its efforts by increasing the amount of time spent in collecting litter, but is now asking town centre traders to become partners in a clean-up campaign.
Letters have been sent to all town centre retailers asking them to help by keeping the area around their own premises clear of rubbish.
Councillor Mrs Sally Derham Wilkes, Portfolio Holder for Business and
Tourism at Christchurch Council, said: “It’s unfortunate that we still have
people who think it’s acceptable to throw their rubbish on the ground instead of in the bins we provide, but we are asking all of the town centre traders to help us in our fight to keep Christchurch clean.
“We have many visitors from the UK and abroad and it doesn’t present a good picture if they see litter lying around. By working together we know that we can give a much better first impression to tourists and convince them to come back and patronise our businesses.”
The initiative has the support of Christchurch Chamber of Trade. Terry
Atkinson, General Secretary, said: “We all know the pleasure of visiting,
working or living in an attractive and clean location. The tidiness of a town is a key factor that can make or mar one’s visit. Recently, Christchurch has fared less well than some other local towns and it is time to redress the situation.
“In these days of spending restrictions, it is unfortunate that we have to spend so much on cleaning up litter, and it is unrealistic to expect the Council do everything. The solution lies in us all setting an example; to each do our bit to promote a culture of pride in the town by securing a litter free and pleasant environment.”
What do you, the people of Christchurch think ?

Thank you for your comments simosimpson - What you call the single yellow line in the water is a rope from a boat ! Thats how they go when they have been in use for a while ! Hence the can "can" float above it ! It's not a doctored or "Strange" photo.

ReportThe council would be within their re-mit to make a start on the traders who occupy stalls in the market on Mondays. The traders can be frequently seen throwing litter down, or, placing litter on top of a pile which the wind soon dislodges. This occurs mainly when calling out to sell their wares, when they get a few people asking for the promoted item they tend to discard the packaging in their rush to sell as much as possible, with no regard for where it's landing

Coral Smith - It's a shame. Christchurch is my home town and it is such a lovely place, why does it have to be spoilt by litter. Went to Ostend in June and the street cleaner was out every morning, bright and early. Now that's taking a pride in your area.... Why aren't we more like that and what about teaching the youngsters about those things called litter bins and how they are supposed to be used for litter!! Ferndown is just the same. No pride in the place where you live, especially the younger generation ( sorry to berate them, but they are mainly the culprits!)
