Work has started on replacing the old footbridge over the busy A35 Christchurch bypass.
The 1960s Burton Road bridge will be replaced by a new single-span version that will be higher and safer, with easier access for disabled people.
As a result of the work, the A35 will be partially closed for several months from February 13.
The road will be reduced to one lane between the Stony Lane and the Somerford roundabouts in both directions between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings.
This means it will be fully open at school drop-off and pick-up times when traffic is heaviest.
The same stretch will be closed completely for six nights later in the programme, when the new bridge and ramps are being lifted into position and the old bridge removed.
Local residents will be informed when the dates for this are known.
The footbridge has been weakened over the years after by being hit by high vehicles, and its central support has been damaged by further impact. The stepped ramps and headroom do not meet current accessibility criteria.
Dorset County Council says replacing the bridge and ramps will be cheaper than continuing to maintain them, and the new bridge is expected to be open in mid-June.
Pedestrians will be able to use the existing bridge throughout the works, except on the nights when the new bridge is being installed and the old one removed.
