Get it Swept! - Chimney Sweeps that Cover Christchurch

This week autumn arrived in no uncertain terms. Lashed with rain and wind, Dorset became a rather damp place to be and temperatures have also fallen quickly. So it's no surprise that many of us have started to seek refuge indoors in front of a cosy open fire or woodburning stove.

However, if you've not had your chimney swept this year, don't be tempted into lighting a fire just yet. Last week saw chimney fire incidents across the county as people sought warmth without thinking about safety.

Soot and other combustible materials build up in chimneys over time, these must be removed periodically otherwise you risk a chimney fire which can severely damage your house and put lives at risk. Birds are also prone to nesting in chimneys which can obstruct the air flow and cause build ups of toxic fumes inside your house - nasty.

Fire Investigation Officer Stuart Granger, attending a chimney fire in Moreton last week said: "Over the last week, the weather has turned much colder and these incidents are unfortunately examples of what can happen if your chimney is not swept before use. Chimney fires become much more frequent at this time of year so in order to keep you and your family safe from fire, you need to take necessary steps. Please ensure your chimney is swept regularly, Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers, make sure embers are properly put out  before you go to bed and keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained. Finally, I would urge all householders to ensure they have a working smoke alarm in their home, that is tested weekly."

If you've not had your chimney swept yet, you need to book it in quick. Sweeps are notoriously busy at this time of year, be prepared to wait a few weeks before you can get one out - as always best to start local as there's more chance someone will be able to 'fit you in' early if they don't have to travel across the county.
