Students from a Dorset school are taking part in the Good Citizen Project to learn a key skill and help their community.
Year 9 students from The Grange School Christchurch are being offered the opportunity to learn a key skill that they can implement in the community should the need arise.
The Grange Safer Neighbourhood Team and The Grange School are working together to create the Good Citizen Project. The project is aimed at giving young people confidence in their ability to be a good citizen.
Throughout the school year, qualified professionals will hold a series of events for the 130 year 9 students. These events will include a community litter pick, a community car wash, a road safety and cycling proficiency input, a talk from the RNLI coastguard about water safety, an input from Dorset Fire and Rescue about fire safety and a first aid training event from Dorset Police.
Each event aims to provide the students with a key skill or enable them to do something that could benefit the community. Their behaviour, appearance and ability are all monitored by The Grange Safer Neighbourhood Team and the school and an award is presented at the end of the academic year to the students who have shown the most commitment.
The Grange School Head teacher Mr Dossett said: "We want every young person to feel that they are of value and can contribute something back to society no matter how academic or not they are."
Police Community Support Officer Bev Baker said: "This project is about giving young people confidence in their ability to be a good citizen with emphasis on good conduct at home, at school and in their community.
"Our slogan for the project is 'Respect for others, Respect for the environment and Self respect'. This project will give these students all three."
