Christchurch's recycling rate has doubled in the first two weeks of the new 'Recycle for Dorset' waste collection programme.

Previously, the recycle rate for Christchurch was 34%, this rose to 70% as the new waste collection services rolled out. 428 tonnes of waste were collected, with more than 200 tonnes being dry recyclables and around 70 tonnes being food waste.

Cllr Margaret Phipps, portfolio holder for Environment at Christchurch Council, said: "This is an amazing result and I would like to thank the people of Christchurch for getting behind the new system so wholeheartedly.

"Any new way of operating can sometimes take a while to bed in and get used to, but the facts speak for themselves and they show that we made the right decision to become part of the county-wide Dorset Waste Partnership and the 'recycle for Dorset' service.

The 'Recycle for Dorset' collections are being rolled out across the county over the next two years.
